Keeping the cost of driving under control

By: Meg Dilts

The cost of running your car can often reach dizzying heights. The price of fuel, road tax and insurance can all add up and make driving your car very expensive.

So what could you do to keep the cost of driving under control?

Only start your engine when you're ready to set off

When you're heading out and getting into your car, only start the engine when you're actually ready to set off. Don't just start it and sit waiting/talking. Starting it when you are actually ready can help you avoid wasting fuel by idling.

Drive economically

1.Drive smoothly - or at least try! So, rather than setting off fast to try and beat that other car at the lights, just set off smoothly - avoid accelerating harshly and make sure that when you are slowing down, you do it smoothly.

2.If you are driving in a hot car, just open all the windows - don't put the air-con on unless you really need to. Ok, so having air-con is a nice addition to a car, and can add value - but switching it on while driving will use more fuel, costing you more to keep your car on the road.

3.We're all guilty of speeding every now and again, but if you don't stick to the limits, you will be using more fuel. Driving at 70mph could use up to 10% more fuel than driving at 60mph.

Regularly maintain your vehicle

Make sure your car is in good condition all the time. This can be a big ask, but it will be worth it in the long term.

For example, you should make sure you are using the right oil in your engine and make sure your tyres are always inflated correctly.

Lose any excess weight/accessories

If you are carrying excess/unnecessary weight in your car, you will be using more fuel - so check all possible storage spaces in your car and remove what you don't need with you on that journey!

Also, if your car has a roof rack/box that you left on from the summer holiday, take it down. These accessories create extra wind resistance, which will increase fuel consumption.

If the cost of driving gets too much…

If the cost of keeping your car running simply gets too much and you end up in debt trying to afford your travel expenses, you could seek professional debt advice.
